Biosecurity Efforts

"The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) is committed to the best standards of environmental management. Now, more than ever before, biosecurity is essential in that endeavour. Following the successful habitat restoration projects to remove reindeer and rodents from South Georgia, and amidst an ambitious non-native plant eradication project, it is imperative that we prevent the reintroduction of non-native invasive species to South Georgia which threaten to undo the habitat and ecosystem recovery enjoyed since these projects began.

"Raising biosecurity standards to better protect South Georgia requires a significant investment of time and good will from visitors and expedition staff. GSGSSI believes that a key way to make this effort sustainable, lies in streamlining the design of the outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment used, making them less likely to become entrained with propagules, and easier to biosecure.

"GSGSSI were delighted to learn that Ship to Shore Traveler has taken steps to provide clothing and footwear with simple design features to make them easier to biosecure. By reducing the number of velcro fastenings (especially on the ankles of waterproof trousers), removing mesh from backpacks, and switching to a boot with a larger open tread, we believe that the inherent risk of transporting seeds, soil and other biosecurity risk material, is greatly reduced. This is good news for South Georgia and beyond!"
