LORRAINE BETTS AND THE HISTORY OF SHIP TO SHORE TRAVELER

At the early age of 11, Kenya-born Lorraine Betts found herself with her father in an adventure store in Nairobi looking for 'all the right gear' to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. "My father helped me select the newest, most high-tech equipment available." Three weeks later she was experiencing her first snow! Lorraine went on to spend eighteen years in the remote and beautiful Seychelles Islands. She later worked for a renowned Manhattan designer and in 1983 Lorraine found herself on the great white continent. This was to be the first of 62 Antarctic expeditions (to-date), as well as many far-flung expeditions to locations across the globe.

In 1993, Lorraine moved to Seattle and set up a small supply and retail company, Ship to Shore, Inc. The past decade has brought about an explosion of innovative, high-performance fabrics and equipment. She has used her expedition experience and manufacturing knowledge to outfit many of the expedition cruise companies' expedition staff, deck crew and passengers with destination-specific gear. In addition, Ship to Shore has provided on-board shopping for 12 vessels and designs and manufactures custom parkas for expedition cruise operators, many of whom give the parkas to their guest free of charge to ensure they are properly outfitted for the unpredictable Antarctic climate.
